European kitchens are organised along the walls. American kitchens are organised around the middle — a large island where people sit, eat, do homework and talk while someone cooks. That single difference drives every other decision: the island gets bigger, the seating is planned properly rather than added as an afterthought, and the kitchen opens into the family room rather than closing off from it.
It needs floor area, which is why this works in a villa kitchen and rarely in an apartment. A seated island needs 1,100mm of clear space behind the stools, on top of the 1,000mm walkway on the working sides. We measure that before drawing anything and tell you honestly whether the room carries it. When it does, the cabinets around it can be generous — deep drawers, a proper pantry, and housings sized for American appliances rather than European ones.
The appliance point matters more than people expect. A US-style double-door fridge is typically 900mm wide and up to 1,800mm tall, which no standard European housing accommodates. If you want one, the run has to be designed around it from the start — and the same applies to a range cooker, which needs its own extraction and often its own gas provision.

What is a shaker kitchen?
A door style: a flat recessed centre panel held in a five-piece frame, traditionally painted rather than veneered. It is the defining front of American and English kitchens, and it works in both a traditional and a modern room depending on the colour and the hardware.
Will an American kitchen fit in a Dubai apartment?
Usually not in full. The look depends on a large seated island and a walk-in pantry, and both need floor area most apartments do not have. A shaker front works anywhere — the layout is what needs space. For apartments we would suggest shaker fronts with a compact layout instead; see apartment kitchen renovation.
How much space does a seated island need?
At least 1,800mm of island length to seat three comfortably, a 380mm worktop overhang, and 1,100mm of clear floor behind the stools so they can be pulled out. On the working sides you still need 1,000mm of walkway. Below those numbers the island becomes an obstacle rather than a place to sit.
Can you build a walk-in pantry?
Yes, where the floor plan allows a small room or a deep recess off the kitchen. Where it does not, a full-height larder run does most of the same job in a fraction of the space. We will show you both in 3D before you choose.
Do you build housings for American appliances?
Yes. A 900mm double-door fridge, a range cooker and a microwave drawer all need housings built to their actual dimensions, which is straightforward when the units are made in our own workshop and impossible with standard European carcass sizes. Send us the model numbers and we build to them.
Is a shaker kitchen more expensive than a flat door?
A little, because a five-piece frame is more work than a single slab and the painted finish takes more coats. The difference is modest against the whole job. The worktop and the appliances move the number far more than the door style does.
